Pastoral Reflections on Life and Ministry

Fresh Coat Or Fresh Heart?

Introduction

Recently our church parking lot received a new top seal coat.  I am always amazed at how nice a new coat appears on the top of the parking lot!  As I looked out the church window and saw the work that was done, I began to reflect on our spiritual lives.  Sometimes we try to put a fresh coat of spirituality on the surface of our lives.  We might get involved in an act of service, take on a new ministry, or just simply come to church for worship and fellowship.  But sometimes we do this with our hearts not being right.  Sure, everything looks great on the outside, but we have sin that is festering on the inside.  No matter how we appear externally, we cannot simply cover what is on the inside; sooner or later it will come out and will destroy us!

Final Thoughts

As you prepare for Sunday, let me challenge you to take time to think about your heart.  As you prepare for your ministry or simply prepare to walk into the building, prepare yourself spiritually.  Take care of whatever “stuff” might be lingering on the inside and come to church on Sunday with more than just a new coat of spirituality on the surface, come to church with a changed heart!
