Introduction

Do you ever get tired in your spiritual life?  Sometimes we can be prone to weariness in serving God or doing what’s right.  Life can be difficult, and the burdens of this world can wear upon our souls.  But Galatians 6:9 reminds us: “Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary.”  This verse gives us the hope to continue during the weary times of life!

Pondering Truth

As I ponder this text, I notice a few truths.  First of all, let me point out the reality of weariness.  The Apostle Paul recognized this tendency in his life and in our lives–he acknowledges that weariness occurs.  This is a reality we often forget.  We like to live life on “spiritual energy drink” where our theme is the phrase in a popular Christian hymn “and now I am happy all the day.”  The fact of the matter is, sometimes we are not “happy all the day.”  We do experience weariness and discouragement!  That is why the Apostle Paul does not stop here in his discussion of the realities of life.  He encourages us to fight these feelings by focusing on the blessing of service.  He writes that in “due season,” or at just the right time, we will receive a reward.  He encourages believers to have an eternal perspective on life—the weariness we face is temporary, but the reward we receive is eternal.  In essence, Paul is asking us to trade something temporary for something lasting forever.  What a trade!  Yet so often we choose the temporary over the eternal.  Too often we live in light of our weariness or discouragement rather than the eternal reward for persistence.  This reminds me of a statement I heard as a teenager from a visiting missionary who spoke at our church.  The missionary said, “spiritual maturity is doing what you know you should do, even when you do not feel like it!”  This is the reality of our spiritual lives, and often time we have to trade what we feel like for what we know we need to do.  When we make that trade, it will pay off!

Final Thoughts

Are you overwhelmed by the weary situations in your life?  Turn to God!  Don’t allow the temporary burden of what you are going through to strip you of the reward that God promises to those who remain faithful in service to Him!  Determine this week to persevere and pursue what God wants you to do, for that is the pathway to blessing!
